Memphis Inner City Rugby (MICR) is a nonprofit founded in 2012 by teachers who saw a lack of resources and opportunities for youth in Memphis. MICR uses rugby to close the opportunity gap and create a supportive community for students in under-resourced neighborhoods. They run 13 rugby teams for middle and high school students, serving over 350 youth annually at no cost to families. The program combines athletic development with academic support, trauma-informed coaching, free nutrition, leadership workshops, and professional development, helping students build skills for success on and off the field.
MICR also offers a robust Alumni Support Program that provides college mentoring, scholarships, paid internships, and financial assistance like textbook and food stipends. This program helps alumni persist in college and develop life and professional skills. Many alumni return as coaches and staff, reinforcing a cycle of support and leadership.
The organization has been recognized nationally for its impact on youth development, mental well-being, and reducing exposure to negative influences. MICR’s mission is to empower youth, foster community, and drive upward mobility through rugby and holistic support, making a lasting difference in Memphis.
